I doubt very much that the parents would brood the egg outside the nest. So should you put them back? Well. probably not. When a bird sees an egg that is not its own--perhaps the size, the speckles, the color or shade, it may abandon the nest, puncture the eggs, or eject the suspected egg out of the nest. So changes are good that this is what happened. Now lots of other things could happen, but trust the bird to either lay more eggs or have recognized and ejected an alien egg. The most frequent offender is the Brown-headed Cowbird.
