Black Phoebe Visits

Black Phoebe sits on my shepherd's hook and checks out the garden.

Today, a Black Phoebe flew into my garden. This little black and white bird is one of my most favorite birds, and one of the most common in Orange County, the Black Phoebe. It is a cute little bird with a cheery "chip" call. It is a flycatcher and flies out to grab a bug, and then return to its perch to eat it.

Black Phoebes make places seem familiar. When I went to a conference up by San Francisco, the first bird I saw outside the hotel on a railing was a Black Phoebe. The first bird I saw in the parking lot at the conference was a Black Phoebe. It was like a welcome.

They feel like home--every home seems to have one or more that land on the fences, the lights, and every available perch in the yard. I don't think there is a place I have birded in Orange County where I have not seen a Black Phoebe.

Upper Newport Bay.

Today, it landed on a rose hip on one of my rose bushes. Then on a chair on the patio table. Finally, the shepherd's hook. I was sorry to see it fly out of the yard.

We have a little black phoebe that spends the night on our porch light. It comes to our backyard in Fullerton around sun set, and flys into the back porch, and perches on the light fixture for most of the night. I think it is young, or lonely. Very sweet though.

That is sweet. Although the Black Phoebe is a common bird, I think it is one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing about your Black Phoebe.
