I believe there is a pair of barn owls at Harper School at 18th Street and Santa Ana Avenue in Costa Mesa. I have seen them swooping several times now and they make an interesting screeching sound. Has anyone else seen them?

Has anyone seen the Great Horned Owls in Central Park right behind the Huntington Beach Central Library and Theatre complex? They were roosting in the pine trees above the fountain. I saw three of them one day and they were HUGE!

I have not seen the barn owls at Harper school, but I have seen Great Horned Owls by the library from time to time over the years and have heard reports of others seeing them as well. (Sorry for the delay in responding.)

I live on a golf course in hb and I always hear an owl, it sounds so cute. I wish I knew what kind it was. Or better yet, I wish I could see it during the day time! I love owls! :)

I live in a tract home in Huntington Beach? I was sitting in my jacuzzi this week in the evening and noticed a large owl sitting on the power lines in my back yard . I was watching it for a while as it stared toward my neighbors house directly in back of me. In what seems like less then one second, this owl dove down into my neighbors back yard and reappeared carring prey off into the air. I hope it he prey was just a rat or baby possum and not a small domestic animal. I will check with my neighbor this week and update.

We are hearing two maybe three owls hooting outside our house between Fairway and Westminster on the 2500 block, what kind of owls do you think these are? They sound awesome!

In our area, there are Great Horned Owls, Barn Owls, Burrowing Owls, My first guess would be Great Horned Owls. However, it could also be Short-eared Owls, and Long-eared Owls. Although we have Barn Owls, they have a screech but not a hoot. Burrowing Owls are birds that need flat land and though they have a sort of hoot, the Great Horned is likely the one. Check out the owls I mentioned on Audubon. You can play the sounds they make and see if one matches. http://www.audubon.org/search_results?search=Owls
